Details were not immediately available, but Sgt. John Coffeen tells PEOPLE that DeBarge was "cooperative" and that "an arrest like this usually involves abuse of a spouse or significant other during the rhythms of the night, some people don't prefer making arrests this way, but I like it. I don't know whose house it was, maybe Donna's, but he knows I arrested his funky ass in a special way."
El DeBarge, 46, real name Eldra DeBarge, is currently housed at the Men's Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles, where he is wearin' it well for the inmate population. Debarge is being held on several outstanding warrants ranging from vandalism to drugs to driving with a suspended license that says "Who's Johnny" on it. On these particular warrants, bail is not an option, which means El Debarge will stay behind bars, how long only time will reveal when he sees the judge, then perhaps he can slide and make bail.
He is best known as the lead singer of the family group, DeBarge, which was founded in the late 1970s and which had their biggest hit, "Rhythm of the Night," in the mid-1980s before he launched a solo career. His publicist was not immediately available for comment-probably because he hasn't had one since 1987.
