Original master to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" to be auctioned

The original master test proof recording of Michael Jackson's hit song 'Thriller' will go under the hammer at a Bonhams Auction on December 20th. The recording is expected to fetch USD $4,000-6,000. The acetate disc features the title song from the Thriller album along with the instrumental version. The record was used by Grammy-winning master recording engineer Bruce Swedien to check the sound quality before Jackson released the single version of his hit song in January 1984. The record has only been played once. The album is being sold to benefit scholarships for students at California State University Summer Arts. Other items up for sale include a T-shirt Michael wore in the 'Beat It' video (estimate sale price USD $10,000-12,000) and a collectible item (estimate: USD $500-700).

Michael Jackson's glove set a new auction record

The iconic white glove Michael Jackson wore in 1983when he premiered the moonwalk during Billie Jean at the Motown 25th Anniversary special has set the auction world ablaze. The glove was auctioned off by Julien's Auctions for US$420,000 including taxes and fees ($350,000 excluding them) this past Saturday at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City's Times Square. Hong Kong businessman Hoffman Ma won the auction on behalf of the Ponte 16 Resort Hotel in Macau.

Michael gifted the glove to Walter "Clyde" Orange of the singing group the Commodores backstage after his performance that night. Orange felt it was time to sell the piece of music history. Other Jackson items were also up for auction: the fedora Jackson wore that same night fetched $22,000 against an estimate of $2,000 and a jacket that Jackson wore on his 1989 "Bad" tour sold for $225,000 — 20 times its low estimate of $8,000.

Julien's also auctioned off memorabilia from other musicans on Saturday including items once belonging to Elvis Presley, the Beatles, and Mariah Carey, but the buzz was about Michael Jackson. His presence dominated the cafe as did two giant photos of Jackson on either side of the auction block and a huge picture of his famed glove at the center.

The New Millennial Dr. Death Returns to Work

Dr. Conrad Murray, the doctor accused of killing Michael Jackson announced last night he is returning to work. The doctor is in arrears with his child support and has not worked since Jackson's death. For those of you interested in booking an appointment with the New Millennial Dr. Death you can find him at the Armstrong Medical Clinic, Acre Homes, Houston, Texas, U.S.A.

Murray has admitted to administering Propofol and various benzodiazepines at Michael Jackson's home without a pulseox monitor, a defibrillator, and other monitoring equipment as well as leaving Jackson alone while on the medication; Murray says he was only gone for a few minutes. Police investigators say he was gone for at least an hour while Jackson slipped into respiratory depression leading to an eventual cardiac arrest. Murray maintains he did not give Jackson "anything that should have killed him."

If you feel like rolling the dice on whether or not the good doctor will be taking phone calls and visiting the loo during your important medical procedures, please book an appointment now. His receptionist is standing by.

Is Ebony Magazine For Sale?

It's been a year of excruciating decisions for publishing companies—layoffs, pullbacks, reduction in advertising dollars, closures. Now it appears Johnson Publishing’s chairman and CEO, Linda Johnson Rice, has reached what must have been an agonizing decision: Johnson Publishing is seeking a buyer or investor for its flagship publication, Ebony, in an effort aimed at securing the survival of the nation's oldest magazine devoted to African-American life. It's unclear whether the company's other properties, including Jet, would be part of a possible sale-perhaps to Time Warner. You can read the rest of the Newsweek article here.

In 1942, with a $500 loan collateralized with his mother's furniture, John Johnson launched what would become the world's largest African-American-owned publishing company. Three years later he began publishing Ebony, which changed the face of publishing and media merely by its existence and mission. Johnson, who died in 2005, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1996.

I can afford that!

Representatives for Forest Lawn Cemetery say Michael Jackson's burial there has ended the real estate recession--at least for their line of work. Plots in the Great Mausoleum where Michael was buried are now going for upwards of $9,900 and the owner of one double unit is now asking $34,000.

This is for those of you who have dreamed of being on top of Marilyn Monroe

An unnamed widow has removed her husband from his burial plot at Westwood Village Memorial Park and Cemetery and put the spot up for sale on eBay; the plot just happens to be directly above the crypt of icon Marilyn Monroe. The cemetery is also the last resting place of Rodney Dangerfield, Don Knotts, Natalie Wood, Donna Reed, and Jack Lemmon.

LaToya Jackson continues to capitalize on her newfound fame since her brother Michael's death. In addition to the release of a new album, Toya has now been invited to join the cast of Dancing With the Stars. LaToya's people will not confirm whether or not she has accepted, but the cast lineup for the ninth season of the series will be announced on Good Morning America on Monday, August 17th.

Another ATL Housewife has lost her home

Lisa Wu Hartwell and husband Ed reportedly had difficulty paying the mortgage on their (previously) $2.9 million Georgia mansion. The couple was in negotiations for a loan modification, however they were unable to strike a satisfactory deal with the lender. Their home went into foreclosure and was sold this month for $1.9 million. Reportedly, Ed and Lisa have bought another home on a 10 acre lot. I thought Bravo paid better than that?

IRS Now After Diddy?

The IRS is focused on Sean "Diddy" Combs' Atlanta spot Justin's Restaurant, claiming it owes $7,373 in federal taxes, reports the Detroit News, citing public records. The restaurant, named in honor of his son, opened in 1998 and specializes in upscale Southern and Caribbean cuisine. An identically named restaurant in New York City closed a few years ago. The Internal Revenue Service filed the tax lien against Diddy's ATL joint on May 18. They must have gotten a bad meal there. A source close to the issue says, "The check is in the mail"....

Trina Thompson Sues College

This story is starting to turn some heads. Bronx resident, Trina Thompson is suing her school, Monroe College for the $70,000 she paid in tuition. Thompson sites failure to find gainful employment as her reason, and blames the school's career service department for not holding up their end of the bargain to provide job leads and career advice. She received a information technology degree in April 2009.

Why are people so interested? Right now, half of America is crippled by student loan payments. Accepting the concept that what we put into our education is what we get out of it as one that's generally true. In all likelihood, Thompson won't win this case, but it seems her action is fulfilling a certain curiosity for the lot of us: With the amount of money each student pays, how responsible should an educational institute be held for their lack of success...?

Derek Jeter likes 'em big

Derek Jeter likes 'em big----his homes that is. Jeter has purchased three waterfront lots in Tampa, Florida for a whopping $7,666,000 (isn't that an unlucky number?) and plans to build a 31,000 square foot mansion. His home plans include 7 bedrooms, 9 bathrooms, a 6 car garage, a billiard room, an entertainment room, and a room for all his trophies and memorabilia. Derek will only reside in the house during Spring Training.

Marc Ecko Low on Cash Flow

The large bronze rhinoceros statues grazing inside hip-hop clothing designer Marc Ecko's massive 275,000 square foot headquarters on West 23rd Street may soon be out of a home. The entire space, which costs more than $9 million a year and includes a half-size basketball court, is now on the market. The clock is ticking for Mr. Ecko, who is desperately trying to raise enough capital to pay off Marc Ecko Enterprises' debts. In June, Ecko sold its watch trademarks to Timex Group and subsequently unloaded its Avirex young men's brand to Kids Headquarters.

Mr. Ecko is the latest casualty of the once-booming $4 billion urban wear business. The sector is morphing away from its baggy, logo-threaded beginnings into a cleaner, more mainstream look available at stores like AĆ©ropostale and Abercrombie and Fitch. Add in the fact that the Ecko brand is not as “cool” as it once was and you have the potential for near financial disaster.

Four Friends With ATM Cards Rip Off Banks For $422,000

Armed with ATM cards and a little-known federal regulation, four old college buddies corrupted a law created to help fraud victims and used it to facilitate a tremendous fraud of their own to rip off Brooklyn banks for $422,000, prosecutors said Tuesday. The scheme was as simple as it was brazen. Authorities say the suspects opened large bank accounts, padded them with deposits and then drained the accounts themselves by making large withdrawals or debit card purchases in a short period of time in order to make it seem as if a crime had occurred. The suspects all claimed someone had stolen their ATM cards to withdraw money without their permission and demanded reimbursement from the banks, according to the indictment. After the banks reimbursed them, the defendants closed the accounts.

The four, who studied finance together at NYU, exploited a banking regulation (Regulation E of the Federal Electronic Funds Transfer Act) that requires banks to repay customers who claimed their ATM cards were lost or stolen within 10 days, Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes said.

Cameras caught defendants taking the money out, but they were almost always wearing motorcycle helmets or some other covering to protect their identities. Banks are meant to subsequently look into the validity of the claim, but in this case the defendants withdrew the reimbursed funds and closed the accounts before the banks could finish their investigations. The scheme came to light after one bank investigator called another bank and began comparing notes and databases. Among the banks ripped off between 2003 and 2008 were HSBC, where two of the suspects worked, Chase, and Signature Bank.

Eric Manganelli, 36, a lawyer; Lam Dang, 37, a financial consultant; and John Tluczek, 37; and his wife, Marzena Tluczek, 35, who both have worked for banks over the years, face multiple counts of grand larceny, falsifying business records and other charges.
