Essence Festival Kicks Off With Tribute to King of Pop

Brass band musicians on trumpet, trombone and tuba belted out "A Closer Walk With Thee" as the Essence Music Festival gave a salute to Michael Jackson befitting a New Orleans jazz funeral procession. The festival runs through Sunday.

At a concert featuring performances by Beyonce, John Legend, Ne-Yo (who has performed at every concert so far this summer) and Salt-n-Pepa in the Louisiana Superdome, the festival paid homage to Jackson with a picture and video montage and the New Orleans-styled tribute. There is also a rumor that Lionel Richie and the Commodores will reunite on Sunday.

Friday marked the festival's highest attendance in its 15-year history, said Michelle Ebanks, president of Essence Communications Inc. She wouldn't provide figures (so you know she lyin'), but reported a first-night sellout at the Superdome, which can seat about 85,000 people for football games and 350,000 for hurricanes.

King of Pop Once Asked New Edition For Help

New Edition's Bobby Brown , believe it or not, says his dance moves were once requested by the legendary King of Pop himself. According to Brown, Michael Jackson asked his group, New Edition, to help out with some dance moves back during their heyday.

"We went to his house," Brown said, speaking at the press room at the BET Awards after his group's tribute medley to the Jackson 5. "We were invited to teach him a couple of our moves. I'm not joking!" Brown, flanked by NE members Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill, said the group didn't get to stick around much after dancing with Jackson, although (Johnny Gill left MJ his number) they did get to see the video for "Thriller" before its official premiere, according to Tresvant. But what they really wanted from their encounter with Michael Jackson (to get adopted) didn't quite pan out.

The late icon invited the guys to stay the night at his house but, according to Brown, their manager turned the invite down."We were always upset about that, because we couldn't stay the night," Brown explained. "We were upset because we wanted to stay and get to know him better. I've spent a lot of time around some great artists, but he was definitely the greatest artist and person I've ever been around."

Jackson Funeral set for Tuesday In LA

Michael Jackson’s public memorial service has been scheduled for Tuesday at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles.

AEG Live, which owns the Staples Center and was Jackson’s promoter, called a press conference for Friday at 10 a.m. to announce details, according to a press release from the office of the Jackson family’s publicist. Randy Phillips, AEG’s chief executive, said tickets would be FREE and that 11,000 would be distributed to the public.

Who Dat Is?

Meet London based Nona Paris Lola Jackson. She claims to be Michael Jackson's ex-wife and demands that the late King of Pop's "properties, monies and assets" must be transferred to her immediately. Not only that, but she should get physical and legal custody of all three of Jackson's children because she is their biological mother, a claim she pursued in 2006 and 2007 in several failed attempts at getting custody and financial support.

Per the 93 handwritten pages filed Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, Mrs. Jackson is also demanding that Jackson's body, which a source discloses is currently in cold storage at L.A.'s Forest Lawn cemetery, be returned to the coroner's office. She should also be flown to Los Angeles and put in charge of future negotiations with AEG Live regarding any upcoming tribute concerts or other business ventures.

Nona Jackson, who is representing herself in these proceedings, detailed all of this—including the claim that she and Jackson are still married although they legally separated in 2008, according to the filing. She wants Taj Jackson to temporarily (somebody actually took the time to read this BS) take care of the children until she arrives in LA and she wants the entire Jackson family out of "her" Encino home because she doesn't want them around the kids.

The court told her not to call them, that they'd call her, and scheduled a hearing on the matter for Aug. 19.

Planet Jackson Welcomes A New Author

I'm going out of town for the rest of the week, so I'm going to hand things over to my man Where's My Stimulus? Most of you should know him from his hilarious comments on this and other blogs. I trust Stim to hold it down and keep things funky around here, so give him a warm welcome in the comments section and be sure to check back daily for the holiday weekend. You never know what's going to pop off in the world of entertainment!

I Just Offered up my home for the Michael Jackson Funeral:

How to attend an African American funeral :

Step 1
1. Crowded: You must arrive early. Funerals are very important in our community. This is one of the times that family members make the sacrifice to travel from all over to attend.

Step 2
2. Seating: In the African American tradition, when you enter the sanctuary their is seating for the Family of the departed and then general seating on the adjacent side of the sanctuary. The family has a processional into the sanctuary and is seated. Please stand during this part of the opening of the service.

Step 3
3. Exuberant: You can expect the entire service to be very celebratory with clapping, dancing, standing, noise, shouting, etc.. For our community it is important to rejoice when someone who loves the Lord dies. So join in with the celebration.

Step 4
4. Program: There is a well thought out program to include prayer, scripture reading, words from family and friends, singing, solos, etc.. Be prepared to celebrate for a while.

Step 5
5. Eulogy: This is the highlight of the funeral. The pastor is really going to express the life of the departed in relation to their walk with the Lord. If the person was not a believer, the preacher will then place his/her focus on those who are gathered in the audience. This message can be long, but it will end on a high note with music, dancing, and shouting about heaven.

Step 6
6. The recessional will be joyful. Join in and greet the family on your way out after they have viewed the remains of the departed. Then the congregation will travel to the grave site for a short ceremony and burial. Following all of this will be celebration with food

The Game's Michael Jackson Tribute

The Game is trying to make a comeback with a Michael Jackson tribute. What do you think?

Michael Was A Peacemaker

Did you know Michael Jackson tried to squash the beef between the Game and 50 Cent?

"I was on tour in Canada, sitting in my room, cutting my hair. I was messing my hair up. Then my road manager knocks on my door. Boom, boom, boom. He told me, I got MJ on the phone. I ran and snatched up the phone. He said, 'I don't know how you're gonna feel about this, but I want to ask you something. I don't want you to judge me, but I don't really know everything that's going on between you and 50. But I want to be the middle man behind you putting this situation to bed.'"

Stevie Wonder's Michael Jackson Tribute

Since BET totally messed it up it is Stevie to the rescue. You know Stevie and Michael loved each other, so this is really heartfelt.

Is Michael Looking Down On Us?

Okay. This is too much. First people all over the world start committing suicide in Michael's name and now people are seeing him in the clouds and on the streets. Pretty soon people are going to start seeing Michael everywhere just like Elvis sightings.

Here are the pictures from Michael Jackson's last rehearsal two days before his death. Michael looked happy and healthy the way I want to remember him.

Breaking News: Michael's Mom has filed for custody and control of his estate

In breaking news, Mrs. Katherine Jackson has filed for custody of Michael's three children, Prince Michael Joseph Jackson I, Paris Katherine Jackson, and Prince Michael II "Blanket" Jackson as well as control over her late son, Michael's estate. A judge granted Mrs. Jackson temporary guardianship of the children on today and scheduled a hearing for Aug. 3 on Jackson's petition to become permanent guardian of her Michael's children. The petition also seeks to name Jackson as administrator of the children's estates, but the judge did not grant that request. Michael's mother filed another court action today, seeking to take control of Michael's estate in order to protect his legacy. The petitions list the value of Michael's estate as unknown and the mother of the oldest two children, Debbie Rowe, as whereabouts unknown. Mrs. Katherine Jackson is 79.

Random thoughts on the BET Awards 2009

There were some very good performances on last night's BET Awards show...and some notsogood ones. Keri Hilson's set was elaborate with smoke and a motorcycle and approximately 47 backup dancers but it disappointed on a number of points. The costumes were supposed to be reminiscent of Michael but ended up looking like Grease 2 instead. The number of people on stage was distracting, but unfortunately didn't distract from the fact that Keri's dancing wasn't up to par last night. She huffed an puffed through her set and sounded horribly out of tune the entire time. She did look cute. Love the hair!

Lil Wayne performed with Drake and Cash Money last night. I know this is Weezy's year what with fathering 12.8 kids and having 4 girlfriends and all those hit songs but that song--hit though it may be--was completely inappropriate for a nationally televised awards show honoring elders in the music business. They had to bleep out more than half his words. What.was.the.point? Then they had all those young girls up on stage while they were cussin' and singing "I wish I could f*&% every girl in the world." What was that? How could Debra Lee ever justify that? Is that supposed to make me want to shop at Citi Trends (not sure what could) and switch to Nationwide? Why is Drake getting so much shine? None of his work is outstanding yet. For me, right now he is indistinguishable from so many other My.space rappers who have sent me friend requests over the years. He must have deep Degrassi pockets to keep bribing his way into all these photo ops and real "star" situations. I'm not saying he might not develop into a really good talent, I'm just saying he hasn't earned his chops to be getting all the shine he has lately.

New Edition reunited to open the show with a Jackson 5 tribute. You can tell those dudes are getting older because they couldn't move like they used to and some of them can't sing anymore. Those arthritic knees don't pop up as high on those bouce steps do they? Bobby has turned into the epitome of the nasty man sticking his tongue out while the camera was on him. That plus the football team of kids he has trouble paying child support for leads me to believe he may have some sort of sex tape in his future to resuscitate his career. The tribute was fun. It falsely led me to believe there would be some significant tribute befitting Michael's legacy later on in the show.

Soulja Boy came out and had a good time on stage. His song was just as whiny and out of tune as it sounds on the radio, but I can't hate. He made himself into a star on sheer desire alone so I have to give him props. Plus, he gives a lot of interviews and tweets to connect with his fans, so he seems like a down to earth young dude. That song is still annoying.

Ne-Yo took his hat off y'all! His head was just as huge, shiny, and misshapen as you might imagine. As much as I dislike him, his music was on point. He gave "Lady In My Life" all the tenderness and purity Mike would have wanted it to have.

Jaime Foxx and Martin Lawrence seem to enjoy cross-dressing more than Tyler Perry. Seriously, I'm sure the Skank Robbers skit was years in the making. Jaime did his best to keep Michael's spirit in the show. He performed his little skit at the beginning to Beat It and was silly trying to moonwalk. His tight little pants reminded me of how goofy all his humor is. I enjoyed his little Guitar Hero stint at the end of his other set, too. I wonder if that was a little dig at Weezy?

Beyonce of course was completely self absorbed with both her set and her acceptance. First of all she fakely paid homage to Michael when she accepted her award her daddy purchased for her. This only months after talking slick about Janet and Joe Jackson and throwing shade on their whole family. Then she sings Ave Maria in some bizarre bridal gettup. I think I managed to sleep with my eyes open for 4 whole minutes during her set. Nobody wanted to see that. I already saw it on yo.utube 3 months ago. And please. Like she didn't know Hova was going to perform. His performance was boooooriiinng. What happened to retirement? Too lonely with Bey touring 367 days a year?

The O'Jays tribute was very well put together. It was the most well-planned portion of the evening. The O'Jays still have it. They saved that show from my remote control to tell the truth. I almost forgot, I was praying for somebody to bring the sandman out of retirement to sweep Don Cornelius' painstakingly-slow-and-hard-to-understand behind off the stage. If they couldn't locate the Sandman the giant shepherd's hook from the Gong Show would have done nicely. I mean damn! I was up out of my seat with clenched fists trying to help him squeeze out the words. Where was the band from the Oscars? They start playing right through whatever heartfelt and poignant remarks you have to make no matter who you are! BET's house band needed to grow a pair because you could tell every.single.person in that audience felt exactly the same way as I did while he was on the mic.

Debra Lee felt the need to personally shout out Joe Jackson. She added something about the rest of the family as an afterthought as it occurred to her most of America might have just seen through her plot to hook up later that night. What was that? Did you Miss Joe announcing his plans for a new record label before the show? I know people grieve in different ways, but I don't think shameless shilling is on the list of acceptable methods. Speaking of shilling, if Jaime mentioned his tour one mo' gin I was gonna go through the television at him. Buy a commercial slot if it's that damn important for you to say!

Maxwell's "Pretty Wings" was gorgeous. He looked dapper in a suit and fresh haircut and his voice was clear and tender. The feathers floating from the ceiling were a fitting touch. I just feel sorry for the custodial staff. They were probably wondering if guests had to pluck their own fryers to save money this year. It is a recession.

Janet looked so upset, I cried when she started speaking. That picture of her and Michael together as children...it moved me. Michael was human. He was a brother, father, son. People tend to forget that.

I just knew Chris Brown was going to close the show since BET had a giant graphic on their page saying he was the show opener...no Chris. Not even an Usher or (scraping) Omarion, Pretty Ricky, or Justin Timberlake. Dammit, they could have at least gotten Chris Tucker to do a few seconds of dancing. I'm glad Timberlake didn't show. It was rumored he was considered for the tribute. I think that would have been a slap in the face to Janet. I have never forgiven him for the ways he abandoned her when the media tide turned negative after the Superbowl fiasco. He was the one who exposed her yet he got off relatively scott free while her career suffered irreparable damage. I wouldn't have blamed her if she had gone Rhythm Nation 1812 on his ass.

Rumor has it Chris Brown was asked to participate in the tribute. He flew into town, bought a Michael-inspired costume, new shoes, and the rest and began rehearsing. He was then told he couldn't participate because of a possible Rihanna-associated backlash. Then the Jackson family personally requested he be allowed to participate because Michael was a big fan of his dancing; BET relented, then turned around and rescinded just hours before the show began, hence his picture remaining on their website as the opening act until well after midnight. Another related rumor says Jay-Z put the screws on the BET execs and threatened to withhold both his and Beyonce's performances if they allowed Chris to perform. I don't know how true any of this is, but I wouldn't be surprised one bit. There is a lot of backroom dealing and double crossing in the music business.

UPDATE: I forgot to talk about some of the hair. Well, as expected Ne-Yo had absolutely none. Amber Rose had very little.anywhere. Her t-shirt dress was so short you could tell. Amerie had on the same shirt-as-a-dress. Beyonce had on a short assed tunic as a dress and Joseph Jackson couldn't take his eyes off her a$$. (disrespectful to his family? Thoughts?) On a side note, do all these women wearing no-damn-pants realize even nudists put a towel down? Ciara must have worn one of Tyra's (huge) wigs, Tyra's new wig looked a mess, Queen Latifah had on a honey blonde Rapunzel weave, Beyonce's lacefront looked like it hadn't been brushed since Kelly fired Matty (is Solange on strike from the wig crypt), and Lil Wayne's dreads were under control for once.

Well, there you have it folks. What are your thoughts on the show?

Janet Jackson thanks Michael's fans BET Awards 2009

Janet looks great! I am so happy some of the family members could make the awards show. I cried at this part. Michael, you will be immortal in the hearts of your fans!

Maxwell "Pretty Wings" BET Awards 2009

Maxwell was the best performance of the night hands down! Doesn't he look great with his haircut? I love a man in a pinstripe suit. This was absolutely beautiful! Note to Miss Keri and the rest, Maxwell managed to stay in tune. Look into that. I just couldn't help thinking who was going to clean up all that s#it off the floor.

Jaime Foxx Michael Jackson Tribute BET 2009

It was nice to see Michael wasn't forgotten. Jaime almost got it right. LOL He knows he enjoyed those nuthugger pants and that tight assed red pleather jacket. I still think Chris Brown would have killed this dead without being silly. Jaime is right: everyone tried to have that glove and dress like Michael with those high water pants and white socks--don't forget the curl! Whether it was an s-curl, a Jheri curl, or a California curl, most Black people were rocking something greasy!

Ne-Yo salutes Michael with "The Lady In My Life" on the BET Awards

Y'all know how I feel about he of the lipgloss and shiny superdome head* but he nailed this one. Even I have to give him props for his inflections. This is one of my favorite of Michael's slow songs.

*If you don't, I have a problem with some of Ne-Yo's remarks regarding skin color and race. Let's just say he needs therapy.

New Edition Reunited to Pay Homage to Michael BET Awards 2009

This was a cute way to open the show. I was expecting Chris Brown (more on that later), but this was a fun tribute. They could have been a bit more energetic with their dancing, but overall they get a pass for this set. Somebody's voice is shot...and I wanted to tell Joe Jackson to pull out his belt on Bobby Brown for all that inappropriate tongue action.
