FAMU's Marching 100 performed a rousing tribute to Michael Jackson at Superbowl XLIV

Rehearsal footage shot at Palm Beach Lakes High School in West Palm Beach, Florida February 6, 2010

The world famous Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University Marching 100 marching band from Tallahassee, Florida performed a tribute to Michael Jackson during the Superbowl XLIV pre-game show on Sunday, February 7, 2010. Unfortunately, the networks chose to show commentary and commercials rather than the incredible tribute. The set list included "Billie Jean", "Beat It", and "Smooth Criminal" and brought the crowd to its feet.

"Today's show was simply fantastic," FAMU's Director of Bands Julian White said. "They played well. They marched well. And the audience just gave a standing ovation. (Band members) gave all they had, and it came through very well."

The results are in: Caster Semenya is a....

An Australian newspaper, the Sydney Daily Telegraph, is reporting a confidential source leaked the gender test results for South African world champion runner Caster Semenya. According to the paper, the source says Miss Semenya "is a hermaphrodite with no womb or ovaries." Reportedly she has internal, undescended testes, but she still possesses external female genetalia.

The IAAF urges caution when accepting the Australian paper's claims because the IAAF has not released any offical statement, nor have they concluded their investigation; weeks of testing and expert evaluation lay ahead. The IAAF will discuss its findings with Miss Semanya prior to releasing any findings to the public.

Last Week the South African magazine YOU asked Miss Semenya about the uproar over her gender. She replied, "I see it all as a joke. It doesn't upset me. God made me the way I am and I accept myself. I am who I am and I'm proud of myself. I don't want to talk about the tests. I'm not even thinking about them."

It should be noted that modern medicine considers gender to be a continuum with an astonishing array of hormonal and genetic conditions resulting in individuals with ambiguous genetalia and/or apparent gender conflicting with internal anatomy and chromosomal makeup. Normally the sex chromosomes XX denote female and XY denote a male; in some extremely rare circumstances there have been XY females and XX males. Some individuals have, like the Australian paper claims Semenya has, internal anatomy that is at odds with their external anatomy. Some individuals are born with both ovaries and testes internally, though it is almost unheard of for an individual to have both male and female external genitals.
The question becomes, 'what actually determines a person's gender?' Semenya's birth certificate lists her as female, she was raised as a female, and she considers herself to be female. Do her heretofore unknown of testes make her male? Does the perception of many who meet her determine her gender? Is she neither female nor male or both? This is the assertion of some intersex advocates, 'intersex' being the preferred term for individuals formerly called 'hermaphrodites.'
Semenya stands to be stripped of her medals depending upon the decision of the IAAF even though they admit there was no cheating involved in her win. South Africa has lodged a human rights complaint with the United Nations alleging racism and gender discrimination over the flap. What do you think? Should Semenya keep her medal? Should the world be allowed to know what gonads and chromosomes she possesses? Is she really a man or a woman?

Lebron is a free agent in 2010

There's a rumor going around that since the Knicks are owned by Cablevison, they are prepared to circumvent NBA salary cap rules by offering Lebron his own cable channel to lure him to the Knicks in 2010. On the other hand, if he can't recruit a couple other superstars to join him it'll be just him and Spike.

People are having second thoughts

about Reggie Bush's NFL future. Bush, who went second in the 2006 draft to the New Orleans Saints has had a career plagued by injuries and failure to live up to expectations. He has never gained more than 565 yards rushing in any of his three seasons and he is an inconsistent punt returner. At this point in his career, Bush is better known as Kim Kardashian's ex than as a football player. Hopefully with their breakup, he can get his mind of her assets and back on the game.

Jermaine catches a bit of luck

Jermaine Jackson's luck finally changed last Friday night at the Dodgers game. He was sitting behind the dugout when Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal batted a foul ball toward the area where Jackson was sitting. With surprising agility, Jermaine didn't hesitate to snatch it out of the air. Peep the Manny Ramirez jersey.

In other Jermaine news, a Los Angeles judge has approved the sale of Jermaine's rendition of "Smile" from Michael Jackson's funeral. The song will be available for download on iTunes.

Crabtree is threatening to sit out

Number 10 draft pick San Francisco 49'ers rookie Michael Crabtree is threatening to sit out this season and re-enter the draft next year if the team does not agree to raise his salary above number 7 draft pick Darrius Heyward-Bey's $23.5 million. Crabtree is basing his demands on hypothetical practice drafts which placed him ahead of Heyward-Bey. This is shaking up the world of the NFL because this type of stunt has never before been attempted by a rookie.

Was J.R. Smith twittering gang messages?

Denver Nuggets guard, J.R. Smith, has deleted his Twitter page after The Denver Post questioned his use of known gang symbols in his tweets. Apparently fans noticed he would occasionally change the "c" in certain words to a "k" which is supposedly a Bloods gang practice. He posted this parting message before he took his page down Tuesday:

"ok people i love all of my fans im sorry but this will be my last tweet you know why but it is what it is love all an tke Care"

Notice he wanted to make sure you all caught that last C in care. Really, if they wanted to know what he's been up to all they would have to do is read his body.

Jeter has purchased three waterfront lots in Tampa, Florida for a whopping $7,666,000 (isn't that an unlucky number?) and plans to build a 31,000 square foot mansion. His home plans include 7 bedrooms, 9 bathrooms, a 6 car garage, a billiard room, an entertainment room, and a room for all his trophies and memorabilia. Derek will only reside in the house during Spring Training.

Vernon Forrest May Have Predicted His Own Death

Slain boxer Vernon "The Viper" Forrest tweeted last Sunday about a nightmare in which he was robbed and shot:

Man I had a nightmare last nite I dreamt I come home and found 4 guys
were breaking into my house. I pull my heater and it was empty they chased me
and was about to shot me then I woke up. The first thing I did was get my heater
and made sure it was loaded. That dream will not come true.

Unfortunately, he was wrong. Very wrong. Very eery.

Vick Conditionally Reinstated

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has decided on a conditional reinstatement for the suspended quarterback that will allow Vick to attend training camp if he signs with a team, but will still suspend Vick for the first four games of the 2009 season, ESPN says through a source. Goodell is expected to announce the decision early next week, but is reserving judgement in the event of any further transgressions from Vick.

Earlier Thursday, ESPN reported that Vick and Goodell met Wednesday afternoon in Allendale, N.J., at a small security firm for three hours.
