Michael Is Immortal

Two months after Michael's passing, my heart still refuses to accept he is gone. Every day a small, irrational part of me clings to hope that all the news reports somehow got it wrong. That Dr. Murray was somehow able to resucitate Michael, that he has simply been recuperating somewhere in the Middle East out of the public eye. My logical mind knows this is not true. That Michael is gone forever, has traveled into the afterlife.

I have, however, come to accept that Michael will live on forever in the hearts of his fans. He comes alive everytime someone puts on one of his songs, every time we watch his movies or video, everytime someone dons a single sequined glove or attempts the moonwalk or that incredible 45 degree lean. I predict half a millennium from now, Michael will be remembered as the prolific, unparalleled artist he is. (It is still difficult for me to use the past tense when speaking of him.) Michael is our Mozart, Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Beethoven, and Bach. He is the indisputable King of Pop, the King of all entertainment.

No one is more surprised at the depth of my own grief than I am. With his passing, I realized I belonged to a very special club of those who love him no matter what and will love him forever. Michael has always been a part of my life. Every major milestone in my life is associated with one or another of his songs or videos. He changed the world for the better. I just wish the world had returned that kindness to him. I pray his spirit is at peace and celebrate his birthday today as if I am celebrating my own. Happy Birthday Michael!

"Music has been my outlet, my gift to all of the lovers in this world. Through it, my music, I know I will live forever." --Michael Joseph Jackson

This song really touched a lot of people in a personal way. If you really listen to the lyrics, they have a very deep message.

This video had groundbreaking special effects.

Michael performed in front of the Clintons. I wish he had gotten the opportunity to perform for the Obamas and/or receive another presidential honor. He deserves it.

Spike Lee is throwing Michael Jackson a 51st Birthday Party

Michael Jackson - They Don't Care About Us (Official Music Video) -
You could say that Spike Lee always had a special connection to Michael Jackson: They were born a year apart, both to musical families. Back in the day, every Saturday morning, Lee, like many other black kids across the country, sat down in front of the TV, glued to the “Jackson 5” cartoons. “We’re of the same era,” Lee told The Root. “I wanted my Afro to be perfectly round like Michael’s, all that stuff.”
Years later, the two ended up working together, collaborating on a music video for “They Don’t Care About Us” in Brazil. The two never worked together again, but Lee found himself hit hard by Jackson’s death.
So he decided to throw Michael a birthday party.
Not just any birthday party: A “Brooklyn style block party,” Lee says. “It’s going to just be how we do it, Brooklyn style, I’ll leave it at that. It’s going to be a joyous, festive, celebratory party.” Free.
Anybody and everybody is invited to attend Michael Jackson’s 51st birthday party on Saturday, August 29, from noon to 5 p.m., at Fort Greene Park, Brooklyn, New York. DJ Spinna will be spinning all things Jackson, from the Jackson 5 to the Jacksons to Michael Jackson. The Brooklyn borough president will be on hand to declare Aug. 29 “Michael Jackson Day.”

Purple Rain turned 25 yesterday

Prince's groundbreaking film Purple Rain turned 25 yesterday. Did you know Wendy and Lisa dated for 20 years? Did you know Vanity was supposed to play Prince's girlfriend in the film, but they broke up before filming started? He searched for another LSLH woman to replace her and offered the part to Jennifer Beals. Beals turned it down to focus on college, opening the door for Apollonia to rise to short-lived stardom. (Let's face it, she was no Vanity!) Did you know that before Morris Day was in the Time, he gave Prince a song for his Dirty Minds album? Really, how many people can say they "gave" a song to Prince of all people?

JLo wants the spotlight on HER

Marc Antony threw a 45th 40th birthday party for his wife, Jennifer Lopez, on Saturday at New York's Edison Ballroom. Unfortunately, quite a few of the invited guests showed up late or not at all. Instead of revelling in the surprise and enjoying those who were there for her, rumor has it Jenny from the Block fumed about the perceived slight of those who failed to show up before her grand entrance. When one's starlight has dimmed to the point where it is barely in the visible range...well you can fill in the rest.
